I saw a little girl
Suckling at sweet candy
Feeling nice and dandy
Dancing in a swirl
I saw a little girl
Pure as a white dove
Generous with her love
Her arms to all unfurl
I saw a little girl
Chasing butterflies
Free beneath the skies
Watching yoyos whirl
I saw a little girl
She had an impish smile
That widened like the Nile
Had the glint of a pearl
I saw a litle girl
To mom, she was a handful
Effervescent and playful
Like tresses of her curl
Now, before I lash and hurl
Into the mirror I glance
I leap, I grin at chance
Cuz in me, I see that little girl

You rock, Kavita! “I saw a little girl / To mom, she was a handful / Effervescent and playful / Like tresses of her curl” Smooth lines. Sometimes i look at old photos and can’t believe how I used to look, but after thinking about those old photos, feelings come back. great picture and poem! Thank you for sharing today π
Kavita said:
OH wowwiees!!! Thanks, Adam! That comment made my grin all the more wider! π I am glad you enjoyed this poem, and that it brought back lovely memories to you as well… Old photos really are SOMETHING, aren’t they?!
And for that “handful” bit, I am sure of that, cuz my parents decided that they had plenty to handle with just me! So they stopped at 1! π
I enjoyed writing this one too…especially for One Shot!
Have a super week! And by the way, you are doing an awesome job at playing host as OSW ;-)!

Nice one, Kavita! Love the way you caught the child’s spirit and the mother’s frustration with the child’s non-stop movement – then your gut reaction to the mom and finally recognizing why. The poem bounces with energy. The verses laid out the way they are looks like tigger bounces too. Good work!
Kavita said:
YESS!!! I really wanted to relive those awesome times! And then I figured, I haven’t really lost any of it.. I just have to look a little deeper.. that girl is always gonna be in me (I hope) π
Your mention of Tigger REALLY made me smile!!! π Thank you so much for your sweet words, and I’m glad you enjoyed the poem!
Have a LOVELY Wednesday !

Finding that child in us as we get lost in adulthood make life a miraculous trail, for childhood is always magical and abundant with no practical limitations. Your poem took me to this fantasy world of the little girl.. I could almost hear her giggle π And is that you in the picture? You look so adorable… π !!
Kavita said:
A friend had once told me, ‘one never really loses innocence.. one just has to look a little deeper’… And those lines just stuck in my head!
I am glad that this poem brought back fond memories for you as well… and thank you for your lovely comments…
Oh, and yes, that sure is me in the picture! π hehehe

I am very glad you enjoyed this little reminder poem… and I hope it brought back some lovely memories for you as well…
I really believe that childhood is a phase one must never age out of, no matter how old we are… it is the one thing that’ll keep us alive! That innocence, those heartfelt smiles, the simple way of looking at things… I think it’s an irreplaceable treasure!
Look a bit deeper, smile at your reflection, and in no time, you too will see the little girl in you, smiling back, and waving a “Hi… welcome back!” to you.. π
Have a Beautiful Week, Heartspell… and Happy Childhood all over again!!!!

Innocence, like everything else is a matter of perception… You’re innocent forever Kavs…. most of us forget that little part of ourselves and get carried away… know what, I sure do sound old for a 30yr old… I think its too much beer and Thailand π nevertheless, I agree with you… its the little girl by the window now all grown up and looking back in time and looking back at the same little girl and her innocence π I will drink to that tonight till dawn comes creeping through some sinister window… cheers!!! And hey, I’m grinning with you so you better keep up π
Kavita said:
heheheh… I sure AM grinning (that same wider than Nile grin:)), Navdib… I guess I’m just missing the beer and Thailand… Well, it’s almost 4pm, and I’m in New York! So it’s okay π
You sounded like a 30-yr old little boy, who so desperately wanted to grow up, and is now complaining about it… hehehhe… but your comment says it all!! π
As for me, I am that grown up(??? really???) little girl, looking out the window, and smiling at the reflection that peeps back at her π
Maaannn…what’s the time in Thailand now? If you don’t goto bed right now, dawn will creep in, in no time!
Thank you for your “deep and mature” π comments, buddy…. I am ALWAYS looking forward to them!!!
Have a great week!!! [and go to bed already!!!! ]

Love, love, love this! Poem has a fantastic whimsical rhythm to it when I read it. Great lines here: “I saw a little girl / She had an impish smile / That widened like the Nile / Had the glint of a pearl”

Little girls are the most dangerous creatures of all, I find. They are way too mischievous and cheeky and unpredictable for an old fuddy duddy like me (okay, I’m only in my 30s, but still…). I hide from little girls like that because their dizzying high for life just wears me out!
Okay, that goes for little boys too. And little dogs. Cats. Anything that’s little and has way more energy than should be allowed. Is there a publication that I can fire off a crotchety old Letter to the Editor at? Them young ‘uns and their relentless skylarkin’! Thoughtless! Totally thoughtless! π
Okay, of course I’m only kidding! This was a beautiful poem that brought a big smile to my face. I remember being a quiet kid myself, but I too could be a bit boisterous at times and quite a handful. π
Kavita said:
You know what Tony..come to think of it, I too kinda those dread little ones (except my own little flashback self :)).. with abundant energy that we grown ups (30-whatevers) can never match! π
I too was quite a quiet kid myself, although I like highlighting the not-so-quiet moments π
Anyway, I am very happy to see that you enjoyed this poem, and that it brought back fond memories..
And thank you for your lovely and charming comments! Made me smile too π Ahh..childhood!!
Have a wonderful week ahead!!!

Ah, childhood memories…lovely poem. I spend everyday thinking about how I would love to have my childhood back. I miss that innocence, I miss that playfulness, I miss being a kid.
Is that a photograph of you as a kid?
Kavita said:
Oh… isn’t childhood lovely?!?!? But then again, we can always have those moments now as well, but only we choose it! I sincerely believe that looking at the world with those innocent eyes will actually make it a much more beautiful place to live in π
I’m glad you enjoyed this light poem.. and thank you so much for your lovely comments…
And yes, it is in fact a picture of me as a kid! π
deadpoet88 said:
You were a very cute kid, you must be very pretty π
Yes, I try hard to keep the inner child in me alive, but somehow circumstances want to kill it inside me. But I say, no one can steal it from me. Have you read Calvin and Hobbes? I have a little Calvin in my heart π
Kavita said:
Okay.. I admit I WAS cute.. I am not too sure about the “currently pretty” bit π
It’s a good thing no one can steal you from you! Don’t let ’em!
Oh..and by the way, I ADORE CnH!!! I think Cal is THE MOST sensible kid on this planet! And his dad’s too damn funny! Mom’s a treasure too! Good God!!!
I suppose I too have a piece of Calvin in me… hehehhe π I hope I do! π

Finding that child, treating her with the special attention and care she requires and making sure she doesnβt fade away and disappear in the cruel world of adults is difficult. But itβs also vital. Kavita said:
Glad you too think of it that way, Lua… that inner child must be let out, free to play, and free to do her thing! Doing that more often might actually help us look at this otherwise cruel world with innocent and loving eyes… She is very precious indeed!

Wow – this poem brought tears to my eyes.
For various reasons, I have no pictures of myself when I was a child (well, there is one as a baby and one when I was about 11 – but nothing inbetween). I visited an old uncle a few years ago (I’m now 37) and I saw a picture of a cute little girl, beautiful hair, innocent smile….and at first I did not recognise her – but it was me! Strange experience, as I could not picture myself as a child and had (sadly) not been given the best impression of myself as a kid from the loved ones around me.
Still, regardless, I totally believe in remaining like a kid at heart.
Thanks for sharing this amazing poem my friend! It’s so true – great poetry really does stir the emotions.
Chloe xx

Ohh.. I am so so glad you have at least those few pictures of yourself.. something’s better than nothing! And what’s MOST important is, you still see that little girl in yourself… make sure she sticks around, cuz she is the BEST companion you can ever have (even if you have some real AWESOME friends around you)! Keep this little girl happy, and she will teach you to look at this world and smile π
And a HUGE thank you for your kind words… I am genuinely humbled by your comment, Chloe… You really have made me a very happy person by saying all the lovely things for me…
And even if my poem did half of whatever you said it did, I consider myself very lucky and blessed to have touched your heart… but if it made you cry, then my deepest apologies… that really wasn’t my intention..
I just want you to look at the mirror, see those innocent eyes, the beautiful smile, and smile back π You won’t need any childhood pictures at all!!! π
Have a beautiful weekend, my dear Chloe… (you are one sweet girl)…
Chloe said:
Yes, you’re so right – something IS better than nothing!
When I said you had brought tears to my eyes, I did not mean that I cried – just that tears came to my eyes at the memory your poem evoked, plus the truthfulness that we all need to see that little girl/boy in ourselves and nurture them.
You totally deserve all of the amazing comments you get from your friends around the world because you are VERY talented. In addition to that, you’re such a sweet person and evidently humbled by the compliments you get.
Great stuff – I love our little conversations and really love your writing! Keep it up!

reminds me of the way that time is layered…that the past, present and future are all held within a given moment…to appreciate the way that the Nile would be present in today’s smile carrying the little girl within–beautiful

Awwww… I loved your comment!!! Thank you so much for your thoughtful words.. the idea of Nile being present in today’s smile is really LOVELY! I saw it when I saw my own picture π But when you said, it made me much much happier…
