He strode
Sassy and smart
But rode
Aloof and apart
He ascended
Golden and great
Later descended
Insignificant and irate
He drank
Hearty and hale
Then sank
Pathetic and pale
He remains
Frigid and forgotten
With pains
Rancid and rotten
Like the dying chalice
In the nook of the room
With its look of malice
Shrouded in hate and gloom

This was an excellent poem. I love how just because you win the trophy it doesn’t always signify the best or the better. To me it can also represent a fallen great that got to full of themselves. Well done take on this magpie. Thanks for sharing.

You hit the nail on the head, PU! All your deductions about this poem were absolutely bang on! Thank you so much for your kind comments here… I really appreciate it..

Like the song says…”Used to be’s don’t count anymore”.
Sad, but remember, he or she had fifteen minutes of fame. More than most of us get, but as many have asked, “at what cost?”
Kavita said:
Well said, Stafford.. But I suppose it’s for him to decide what weighs more – fame or.. ?
But you are so right… he had it, alright…
But then again, the grass is always greener on the other side..ain’t it? 🙂

Hm… words popped into my mind from some distant (more religious) past: “How are the mighty fallen!” (from somewhere in the Old Testament, I expect) – Sad to see someone sink to the depths of your protagonist…
Kavita said:
I must confess I am not all too familiar with what’s written in the Old Testament.. but I am pretty sure the stories share a similar base with most religious scriptures…
It is indeed sad to see someone sink so low…
Thank you for your insights here, Ruth… your appreciative comments are something I truly treasure!
Have a lovely weekend, my dear.. xoxoxo

Lost glory says it all. So well written, my friend.
Kavita said:
Glory is quite a fleeting concept… like sand. The more we try to latch on to it, the more it slips from between our fingers… Earning it with dignity is quite a task…no?
Glad you enjoyed the read, Victoria.. thank you for your kind words here…

Wonderful! I love the way you give him and the chalice (perhaps he drank too much from it) the same expression. They are one, in the end. Lo, how the mighty hath fallen.
Kavita said:
He did drink too much from it…so much so that he became it!
I am glad you liked this poem, DS… thank you so much for your kind words of appreciation here.. you are most kind…

I think I as well as many others can relate with this one. Sometimes it all starts as spring and trudges down to cold of winter and sadness of fall-rolled in one
Kavita said:
You have put it very beautifully, Budhaaah… all seasons rolled into one.. that’s exactly how it feels like, after a while! Finding the right balance is the key to it all…isn’t it? I hope we all are able to find that key…
Thanks for insights here, my friends.. your comments here mean a great deal to me!!!

Kavita,
I loved this poem. Such a great depiction of triumph then bitterness. Good take on the magpie prompt.
I’m very happy to meet you. I’m so far the only other person in your group at Poets United. I hope to get to know your writing better and enjoy your creativity.

As for this particular poem, yes, victory and triumph have their limitations, I suppose.. it’s up to us how we overcome those limitations.. I am happy you liked this poem, my (new) friend!! Thanks again for your encouragement and appreciation..

For some reason drew me to thoughts of Alexander the Great in a way – to rise so young, so golden, all the promise of the world upon one’s shoulders; only to lose themselves to debauchery, to undermine themselves with their own desire, dying alone, deprived of all that glory through their own actions. How many have destroyed themselves in such a way?
Thanks for the rhymes, Kavita!
Kavita said:
I see where you are coming from, Chris… I kinda like that comparison myself.. Great Alexander seemed to have achieve so much, and yet lost so much…
Gee… thanks for the appreciation here though!! Any encouragement I get, I shall GRAB greedily! 🙂 Glad you liked this piece, C..
As for the rhymes, well, they’re just part of me now! 🙂

You see, not everything we see is really what we think it is…we might see success in a person…and yet really their soul is torn and wretched. Great poem Kavita which really depicts the reality of such contrasts – with an excellent choice of words.
Have a great week 😀 xx
