He could sense the pain
Then he heard it again
“Sshhh… don’t be afraid…”
Swallowed in sweat
Feeling cold and wet
He was looking all around
Feet barely touching ground

Thoughts were muddled
In this shadowed house
He felt like a mouse

Shutting his eyes tight
And trembling in fright
He thought he was choking
Then felt the slight poking

With a start he awoke
Heard Mom as she spoke
Her eyes, a melting brown

The nightmare now gone

Not all kids are fretting the start of school, but I’m sure my kid is counting the days until summer vacation already.
Oh yea, Eric… I too never minded school at all.. but I had friends that HATED going to school.. This one goes out to them…. 🙂

That would do it all right, for some kids anyway. 🙂 I’m glad it was just a nightmare, though, about the spooky house; I thought for sure there was something worse going on, although the repetitive phrase at the end of each stanza made me feel it was going to be ok in the end.

hehehh, as much as I feel for this poor kid, I must admit,I really enjoyed writing this one.. I think this was the closest I got to writing a story! :)It was an achievement for me! 🙂

What a nice twist towards the end…I was wondering where you were going with this…Fantastic Magpie, Kavita…I also love the repetition…kept me interested till the very last word. Well, I don’t recall having such bad mightmares as a child – but I have really VIVID dreams these days – you could kinda call ’em nightmares 😀 At the moment, my biggest nightmare is how I am gonna catch up with writing/blogging as I’ve been staying at my mums for a coupla days! haha

Ouch! at the ending, lol. And even though the school year has evolved to some extent, the beginning of September, at least here with it’s shift in the feeling of the air, will always bring with it the memories and feelings on that first day of school.

Every fall, I find myself missing the frets of school. I never thought I would have missed it. Oh the joys of adult regret and retrospect.
It’s so strange..isn’t it?! I too miss school now… In fact, back then, I used to miss it even during vacations …

Aaah…wonderful Kavita! Poor kid…but it is so good to know his mother is there to comfort him, through all this waiting darkness. Bloody school! It’s always a terror. The poem though, is a great one, the story superb…and the ending was an especial delight. Love.
