Shush not your footfalls
I can hear them move
behind the curtain
of a timid zephyr
Dampen not your warmth
I can taste its fullness
from the urn
of a melting sun
Efface not your smile
I can see it arc
upon the froth
of crashing waves
Withdraw not your presence
I can feel its weight
midst the rustle
of amber leaves
Bury not your fragrance
I can smell its richness
in the birth
of autumnal showers
Tease me not
with your impish ways
While I lie in wait
beyond all summers
for your coveted kiss
…yet another time…
While I herald
the chirruping harbingers
of your crisp arrival
…yet another time…

Oh, this is exquisite writing.
I do not want to see summer end and go into Autumn, our winters here last far too long and are far too cold but, you make those autumn leaves sound so beautiful, and here, we see them turn in such splendour, too.
A lovely read.

Be gladGLADGLADGLAD you’re not in Dallas anymore. Autumn can’t come too soon. It’s hotter than hades and everything in sight is burned up, the paint has blistered and is peeling off the houses and the trees are bare bark deader than winter. Heaven knows if there will be color, The leaves hang dead and brown and water is rationed.
However, your poem put me in a cooler locale smelling the lush green gone off to color. Very beautiful and well written! Thanks.
Kavita said:
Oh.. I hear ya, Gay dear… I am still in touch with friends from Dallas, and from what hear from them, it’s quite horrid there these days.. the temperature, I mean… I hope it hasn’t affected you badly, my friend.. take care now, will ya?
Glad you liked this poem enough to cool you off a bit.. 🙂 Thanks for the kind words, sweet lady…

Wonderful rhythm and imagery here. It flows so well from start to finish, but perhaps my favorite lines are “Bury not your fragrance / I can smell its richness / in the birth / of autumnal showers” and “While I herald / the chirruping harbingers / of your crisp arrival.” Nicely done!

Hello Kavita.
I absolutely ADORE this poem. How did you know autumn is my most favorite time of year?
I’m living in this poem! I can hear all the sounds & smell all the scents.
Simply beautiful and that painting…my goodness, look at all those magnificent colors…so reminiscent of autumn. I’ve already instructed the heat & humidity of summer to bow down to the hues of autumn (lol).
Did I tell you I LOVE this poem?
Awesome!

Kavita, when I tell people I moved back to the northern US from Puerto Rico “because of the weather,” they laugh… until I explain the lushness of autumn that they take for granted here. This poem is a love letter to my favorite season – and this will be our first Wisconsin autumn, which I understand is gorgeous.
Nothing can replace your description of the season. The form, the italic lines, the sheer beauty of your words. This should be on a page. In a book. Publish it, girl!! xoxo and peace, Amy
