She sat there, in the bar
Proud and all alone
She wore a flashy dress
Baring her skin and bone
She had her usual drink
Breathed into a phone
She lit a cigarette
Her silence screamed “forlorn”
She had a look of steel
But her skin was too worn
She donned a lasting sneer
All chances she had blown
She now lived like the dead
Love, she had outgrown
She felt all cold and dry
A heart she did not own
She looked for somebody
But her eyes never shone
So she sat there, in that bar
Frowning and alone

Well, I know that can’t be you… π
You have a real knack for writing word-portraits of people you’ve never been, and evoking pity for lost souls.
Kavita said:
You are right!! That certainly wasn’t me! π This was part observation and part imagination π
Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words… I really really appreciate that!!! And I am very glad you liked this poem.. and have nailed the idea I have tried to portray here… thank you once again… you are very sweet!
Have a gorgeous week ahead! (many hugs)

Kavita said:
Aahh… thanks a million, Marilynn… We come across such personalities in bars, and then we end up wondering the hows and whens and whys.. I suppose that’s what got me writing this poem… Glad you liked it… I really appreciate your kind words…
Hope you are having a LOVELY week ! π

what a sad sad portrait you paint…having grown cold…perhaps someone will come along and melt that ice so she can live once more…thanks for linking up with one shot again!
Kavita said:
I know, Brian.. a really sad picture… And when you spot these figures lurking around in bars, you cannot help but wonder, and hope that something bright happens in their lives, and soon too!
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words… I hope you liked the poem (although sad)…
Have a fantastic week ahead!

oh i did like it….your structure was cool…every other line beginning in she…making this almost a declarative description…the off beat of the last couple with so draws attention to it…and nice flow…smiles.

gee… thanks a ton, Brian!! Your comments and appreciation mean a lot to me!!! (many hugs to you)

I think anyone who’s ever worked in a bar would recognize this lady, a faded blossom that was plucked too soon.
Kavita said:
You bet, Eric!! In fact anyone who has ever stepped into a bar would’ve come across such a lady… quite a sad picture, isn’t it ?
Anyway, thanks for stopping by… and I really appreciate your insightful comments…
Have a great week ahead!

This is actually so very true…well done…unhappiness within shows through, and the saddest part is, remaining in it, and others cease to really bother after awhile. A usual drink reflects a repetitive placement (perhaps alcoholism) which many may think will “wash away” woes, however, when sober and waking, it all still remains the same. Excellent writing here! ~April π
Kavita said:
You have nailed this one, April… This was what I wanted to portray in this poem… a life lived, now turned into a sad flow of events…events that nobody really cares about… and how one tries to drown the misery of it all by means of a drink (or more), and then later, waking up to the same dreadful reality!
Thank you SO MUCH for your insightful comments and kind words… I am really happy to see you liked this poem, and saw in it what I wanted seen…
Hope you are having a fantabulous week!! Take care.. π [many hugs]

As I read this, what kept running through my head was the music from “Copacabana.” I think youc aught the jaded emptiness of the bar just right.
Kavita said:
“jaded emptiness” – the perfect description of the bar, AND those lost souls too…
Copacabana.. I see where that comes in (sigh)
Thank you so much for your kind words, Glynn…. And I am glad you liked the poem… I really appreciate your insightful comments…
Have a great week ahead, my friend… π [hugs]

Oh.. Thank you (a zillion times over) Adam… Glad you liked the poem…
And yes… we come across such women (well, people) in bars many a time! And don’t they just make you step aside and wonder ?!??!?
Thanks again for your kind comments… I find them very encouraging and they seem to point straight to the crux of my poems…. it’s really a treasure!
Hope you are having a fabulous week, Adam … I’m looking forward to your 160 this Sunday π

Thanks for your insightful comments, Pete… I really appreciate you taking the time… I admire your powerful work, so your words mean a lot to me!!

Kavita said:
You bet, Em!! Such a sad person to be! I hope we never get to that sad phase in life… In fact I hope she (my muse) comes out of it herself…
Well, this poem was part observation and part imagination… but I sincerely wish the reality part of it changed for the better, for this woman… (sigh)
Anyway, thank you so much for your insights…I much appreciate your kind words… And am glad you liked this poem too…
Hope you are having a fabulous time, my friend… take care.. π

Hi Kavita, this is exceptional. It would be interesting to see you take the character in this poem back into her past to discover what led her to this emptiness. π This poem impressed me very much.
Kavita said:
Hmm.. now you’ve gotten me thinking, Val… It would really be interesting to write about the story behind that emptiness… maybe I will write it as a sequel (or will that be a prequel? :))to this one… sometime later though…
I am very happy to see you liked this poem…. and thank you SO MUCH for your kind words and insights… I very much appreciate that!!! And yes, I would indeed love to write about this character…
Hope you are having a great week…
Happy Writing!! π (many hugs)
passerby said:
That would be a flashback not necessarily prequel/sequel
Kavita said:
Ofcourse it is a flashback! But as a poem, it would come AFTER this one… so technically, a sequel π
Thanks for your comment and thoughts, passerby .. I appreciate it..

Oh!! I am all about observing, girl!! Wherever I go, I observe whatever it is I can! People, trees, lights, you name it!!
I am thrilled to see you liked this poem… although the depiction is kinda sad… yea, time and again, we’ve all seen such lost souls sitting in a corner, waiting for nothing in particular… and everytime I notice such a shadow of a person, I wonder! Maybe that’s why I finally decided to write about it…
Thank you so much for identifying that here, Amanda… your words mean the world to me!!! Oh, I MEAN IT (but you know that already :))!!
Anyway….. you slept till AFTER 5????!!! Whoooaa!!! That’s something!!! Some lovely dreams eh?! π Good for you… I hope it was a very rested sleep…

Far too many of these forlorn souls in the world…I always wonder if this was a choice they came to, instead of facing the sometimes difficult work of keeping it al together and moving forward with their life in a more productive and less self destructive way. I guess we all have to make these choices at one time or another. Great vivd picture you’ve painted with these words. Heartspell
Kavita said:
I so agree with you Heartspell… who knows under what circumstances they had to make this choice …
I also wonder… what led to what ? Loneliness to drinking, or the other way around?? Quite frankly, I don’t even want to know… I just want to be able to make these souls feel loved… and sometimes, just a smile can work wonders…
Thank you so much for your kind and insightful words… your comments mean a lot to me!!!

It really is quite sad, Leslie… With some, it’s the situation that getrs them alone…and with some others, its their loneliness and aloofness that gets them nowhere! Either ways, it is a sad story indeed…
My theory is, if you look for love, you won’t find it…on the other hand, if you give some love and share it with others, you will find more and more… but then, that’s just my theory… Situations and circumstances make one do various things!!
Thanks for your insightful comments and for your kind words.. I am glad you liked this poem..
Participating in One Shot is entirely my pleasure!

You captured that aloof aloneness so well. So sad that some spend their lives living in their past and don’t open their hearts to the here and now.
Kavita said:
It was an observation really..and then imagination followed suit…
Bu then, it’s also the reality of many a life.. I wonder what’s the story behind all that aloofness… (sigh)
And I hope we don’t have to face it.. it seems very unpleasant! May those souls find companionship and some peace in this life as well…
Thanks for stopping by, and for your kind and insightful comments on this poem… I really appreciate you taking the time!!! And I’m happy you liked the poem..

Lovely poem, very sad when one outgrows love, and can only feel coldness inside. I really love how you build up her image in our minds, I can really imagine her sitting there with her cold eyes. Great piece!
Apologies for not visiting much lately, been bogged down with work, and when I’m not working, all I do is sleep.
Kavita said:
Heeeyyyyy… please don’t apologize to me, girl…jeeezzz!!! Take your time… and rest well… my poems won’t go anywhere! π
I am glad you liked the poem, DP88 (okay, I am really feeling odd talking to a dead poet ;-))… heheh…jus kiddin’!
As for the poem, well, some part of it was a Friday evening observation, and the rest was my mind getting all worked up! But somehow I get the feeling, I wasn’t too wrong with my story.. cuz there are too many such “lost” individuals… dead in emotion, dried up of every living feeling! Brr… a very scary and sad thought…
Thank you for visiting, girlie… your kind words and insightful comments are something I really look forward to!! But let this not bog you down like your work! π This is you release from insanity π
So…cheers to writing/reading and ENJOYING!!! (And sleeping ofcourse) π

Haunting and, sadly, true – they say “fake it til you make it” but sometimes you just fake it and fake it until all there is, is the fake.
Maybe not *precisely* what you intended, but it happens as you get older.
Immediately made me think of this song, “Love Got Lost”, by Joe Jackson (“Stepping Out”), sung by Marianne Faithfull, as a bitter middle aged businesswoman – http://blip.fm/~uh26k . (Again, I do not think precisely as you intend here)
Kavita said:
You are so right about it all, Lawrence… they fake it so much, that after a while, all that is left is the faking! With no scope to make .. π¦

OH YES!! I remember reading your poem…. And now, I am beginning to think that the idea was probably sitting at the back of my head ever since… and then my own observation some time last weekend probably brought it to resurface… phhheeewww… the mind works in really strange ways…
Thanks for redirecting me to your poem, Patti… it was sad but lovely read! I guess many of us have noticed such lonely men/women sitting at bars, that just sit there not knowing what else to do, how to make their lives any more interesting…. and then, eventually, we bring ourselves to write about such lost souls… (sigh)

Just when I was thinking of writing about people in a bar and the going on’s therein π I had an amusing (I find them all amusing especially such ones) character sitting next to me trying to get a peek into my laptop and trying very hard to make conversation with the girls at the bar (they are cute) serving drinks… and the manager (a caucasian man who’s obviously been here in Bangkok for way too long) was so not amused when this man tried making small talk and said – I didn’t know people like beer π hahaha…
Maybe, someday, I will write something too. I like your take though π it seems familiar π

You really do seem to be able to write about anything Kavita! Amazing! And you paint such vivd imagery with your words.
As for this woman, you see so many people out there who have wasted their youth, or have become bitter and twisted…it’s etched upon their face and painted in their eyes, which like you say, never shine.
Awesome work my friend!
